There are numerous Christmas markets in Vienna but you can hardly visit all of them. It took us years 😉 That’s why we tell you about our favorite ones.
If you already know us for a bit you know that we absolutely love Vienna. Vienna is definitely a the top of our list when you ask us about our favourite city. Annagreta lived there for almost seven years and Tom spent several weekends over there during our long distance relationship.
Vienna is worth a trip all year round. There is always something to do and great attractions and events going on every day. It’s impossible to get bored and you will always have a great time if you want – we promise!
Especially in wintertime, when it’s getting cold outside, the city becomes very charming. When the streets and the buildings get decorated with lights and the smell of waffles and glühwein is in the wind the city is turning into a winter wonderland. Even without snow it’s not possible to not get into the christmas mood.
The Karlsplatz is one of our favorite places in Vienna. This christmas market is all about art and we really like to walk through and look at all the artwork and the handicrafts. There’s always something to find here if you need a last-minute present or a souvenir. In front of the church, the Karlskirche, you will find a living manger, the sheeps are a big hit for the kids!
This chirstmas market is really charming as it’s in a really lovely area of the city. The streets are quite narrow and plastered which gives it a special athmosphere. You will find all kinds of crafts here. If you are getting cold you can just sit down in one of the cafés you find there or take a look at one of many local art shops. We always enjoy to walk through these streets with the old small buildings on each side and look at all the crafts which are sold.
Maria-Theresien Platz and Museumsquartier
The so called Maria-Theresien-Platz is located between the Kunsthistorisches museum and the Naturhistorisches museum. You cannot miss these two buildings as they are a must-see on every trip to Vienna. The athmosphere is really calm and cozy. You will find plenty of good food, glühwine and other warm drinks and while you are enjoying them you can take a look at all the handmade gift ideas which are presented in about 70 booths.
Just across the street you will find the christmas market in the Museumsquartier. It’s a very modern market. Here you will find good glühwein, an beautiful light show and nice music. Simply a very nice place to be!
The reason we like this christmas market is because it’s located in the big courtyard of the former general hospital. Like that you feel cozy inside while you leave the busy city life outside. Besides the booths you will also find some attractions for the kids and an ice stock track. If it gets too cold outside you can also enjoy typical austrian food and drinks in one of the wooden huts or in one of the local pubs.
This christmas market has its own charme. You will find it at the Freyung, a beautiful place in the city center. The market is all about tradition, and is held since the year 1772. We love to walk through and listen to the live music which is held every afternoon. Here you will find gingerbread, soaps, candles, ceramics and many more top-quality handicrafts.
These were our insider tips! The following two christmas markets are probably the most famous ones. They can be very crowded and full of tourists but we definitely recommend to visit them.
The christmas market at the Rathausplatz with its 150 booths is huge and the scenery with the town hall on one side and the so called Burgtheater on the other side is beautiful. You can first go ice-scating on the over 3,000 m² ice rink that goes through the park around the market and satisfy your hunger afterwards. From here you will not leave hungry or thirsty, there’s something to find for everyone. If you want to shop some gifts we advice to go in the afternoon as it will be very crowded in the evening.
If you are looking for an impressive royal scenery, the christmas market at the Palace Schönbrunn is the place to be. It can easily get very crowded so make sure to get there early! Make sure to also do a walk in the park on a sunny day.
You will find a lot more markets in Vienna, there are small ones all over the place. But of the biggest ones, these are the ones we prefer! All the christmas markets in Vienna are very charming and worth a visit. They are the perfect place for a romantic evening walk. If you need a souvenir, every market has its own mugs which are really nice! Enjoy 🙂
